Pits and Progress (and URIs for Google)

November 17th, 2009 by Dave

Oops! I’m sure that all three of you readers have been saddened by the lack of Wordpress secrets or indeed, the lack of anything on this beautiful blog. It’s been since May!! Fortunately, that means that Matt and I have been busy doing actual work. One of our fun projects lately has involved SEO scripting (!) for a local business using an entirely undocumented CMS. The content management system in question was creating really nasty URIs (think index.php?id1=123&id2=231&id3=432) and we suspected that we could improve search engine traffic significantly by cleaning up the URIs a bit. Sure enough, index.php?gobble=32&dy=9&gook=12 became a/clean/path/name/with/really-nice-words and Google ate it up. The best part is, we didn’t need to touch the CMS source code at all.

How, you ask? It was simple, really. (So simple in fact that I wish every CMS in existence would just do it, and rid us of dirty query strings forever!) All it took was a buffer and a conversion table and some .htaccess magic. We were lucky in that the CMS was newly installed, so the amount of incoming external links using ugly URIs were negligible. That meant all we had to do was clean up the links on the site (by running every page through a buffer and replacing URIs), and then deconstruct the nice URIs into the appropriate queries on server request. We ended up doing the last bit with a dynamically generated (from PHP) .htaccess file. Oh yeah, and the nice URIs were easy to make since we just pulled their corresponding page titles from the CMS database and “pathified” them (stripping special characters, converting to lower case and subbing spaces for hyphens did the trick).

All in all, it was a fun little project. Most importantly, it’s only been a month and we’re already seeing search engine results improve. Another lesson that every aspect of a site’s presentation matters to the Google.

Also, I left out code examples for readability’s sake but if you’re interested please don’t hesitate to ask!

Empty Promises

May 14th, 2009 by Dave

After much ado and endless toil, blackchair.net is finally live!

We hope to keep this blog up-to-date with our goings-on, together with clever word-hyphenations. More importantly, expect to see some free knowledge spilling out in the next short while! Together with the previously promised WordPress learning extravaganza, there will be tidbits on everything from small business to pretty design and nitty gritty code stuff.

For now though, I’m just going to keep baiting the hook.

Greetings friends and acquaintances and both

It has been a while since I have updated. I finished my last exams and assignments before the summer, then I took the requisite week or so of decompression. I am just finishing up my last page or so for the Black Chair site and have decided to make a quick post. I would like to take this time to say one important thing. That is: I wish every major browser had support for canvas. “But Matt”, you might say, “what about the SVG specification which has been in the works for years?” Well, I haven’t spent much time working with SVG and I love how dynamic canvas is and how easy it is to draw with javascript.
I was going to make a clone of Microsoft Paint in canvas but someone beat me to it with canvaspaint.org, so I’ll leave it at that. But trust me, I will be whipping something cool out with canvas.
Back to Black Chair. We are working on a few small clients right now. A few of them are friends, and the rest are no more than friends of friends of friends or even just friends of friends. However, (however!) when we finish this website finally, we will be a lot more confident with our online presence and ability to promote ourselves. So look for us on the web. That’s where we’ll be!

Quick Update

April 15th, 2009 by Dave

Thanks to the generous advice of my friend Max (check out the Great Canadian Travel Company) we found an excellent lawyer and accountant. The bank account is set up, and now all we need is money to put in it! (Actually, we’re grateful to be working on some really fun projects right now for cool people. Stay tuned!)

I’m hoping to put together a proper article in the near future for people wanting to start their own creative business. It’s easy to be deterred by paperwork and numbers and legalities, but we found out that it’s really straightforward once you finally jump in. Until I have the time to write it though, I do recommend the books and guides of Creative Business. Together with the advice of friends and information available online, The Business Side of Creativity has been invaluable.

Business cards, portfolios and other such important things

March 23rd, 2009 by Matt

Well we’ve been busy. Real busy like. What, between finishing up my school for the year and getting everything set up for Black Chair, I hardly have time to sit back and enjoy a bowl of pretzels and a brimming glass of Zinfandel while finishing up season 5 of The Soprano’s. Okay, that I did. But let me tell you!

It was definitely satisfying to register the business. Then came the task of getting our site up and running. It should be easy. We’re web designers. But I think we were both a little anal about making sure absolutely everything was perfect, including the content. That is: picking the right examples for the portfolio, making our welcome message inviting and clear; add to that making an inviting web presence away from which you aren’t going to click after but a cursory glance!

Oh! Where did my mind go? We received our business cards from the printer’s and let me tell you, we couldn’t be more pleased with how they turned out. Here, I’ll grab a shot of them.
Business Cards
There we go. As a side note of slight complaint. The internet in my apartment has been sluggishly slow, apparently due to some system upgrades which are going on. I secretly think they are just throttling my connection on account of torrents. It reminds me of 1995, except then it was trying to play Legend of the Red Dragon on a local BBS. Okay. Okay. Back.

So to sum up, we’re itching to get the site up. Should be done by this Friday, possibly longer depending on how long we spending flipping through work we’ve done to find the perfect set for the portfolio. So then the end of the weekend at the latest. We’ll call it that, the end of the weekend. Maybe Friday.

Thank you for bearing with my rambling blog post. Mostly, I ramble. Sometimes I mumble.

The Legitimate Article

March 13th, 2009 by Dave

This afternoon Matt and I went down to a big government building on Broadway and popped our ears a few times in the elevators. We also became the (almost) official proprietors of Black Chair Studios™, grand masters of graphic design and web development. There are still a couple of bureaucratic hitches involved, but barring enormously unforeseen developments we are gonna be legit before you know it.

We reconvened afterwards at the one and only Cousin’s Deli for some local brew and serious talk. An almost entirely unpretentious business card blurb was agreed upon, as well as a few stickier financial details. (Now we just need a lawyer to help us set these deli chats in stone.)

Meeting Number 1A

March 4th, 2009 by Dave

I am very pleased to announce that the first BLACKCHAIR meeting went off without a hitch. We met in the regional head office (referred to herein as Matt’s living room), which is marked with a large red spray paint 24. I stopped by my friend Billy’s to pick up pizza on the way (check out Vasilly’s Pizzeria) and Matt supplied the BEvERages. I think the scrap of paper that became our agenda is somewhere in Matt’s trash now, so I can’t refer to it and my memory is rather shoddy. I do remember conversations about pizza and beer and our upcoming road trip to go see Animal Collective, but I’m sure we discussed a lot of what budding freelancers are meant to discuss as well. Including pricing and marketing strategies and hosting plans and the design of our shared portfolio. A lot of what we decided is subject to review, but we did agree to donate a portion of our profits every year to a charity of our choice, so you can expect to see us looking for some input about that later this year. We also decided to use Dreamhost based on the recommendation of a good friend, and to plug them on the blog while we’re at it!

We’re hoping to take care of a fair bit of official papers next week, so wish us luck! (Apparently the only difference between freelancing and working for The Man is a whole lot of paperwork.) Once we get that nasty stuff out of the way, we’re very excited to impose our design sensibilities upon the world.
